Ahmedabad: The Mega City of Gujarat
Ahmedabad, at one time known as the Manchester of India, had a skyline reflecting textile mills. Today,
with a population of 6 million, it is not just largest city of the state of Gujarat, but a rapidly advancing
urban center. In fact, lately in 2010, the forbes magazine rated Ahmedabad as the fastest growing city in
India, and second in the world. It may soon be declared as India’s 6th metro.
With a rich heritage and architecture, some parts of the city are known for their speciality of folk art.
Gandhi Aashram, Sidi Sayed Mosque, Science City, Kankaria Lake, Bhadra Fort are some of the places
that one should never miss when they visit the city.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Coroporation conducts a Heritage walk all 365 days, which is approximately a 3 hours walk in the old city which introduces the walker to the Heritage Houses of poles and the temples, mosques and Derasars of old Ahmedabad.
In January, the city will be pleasantly cold. You are requested to carry light woolens.
Akshardham, Dwarika, Somnath, Chorwad, Geer Sanctuary, Saputara are other places of Gujarat that are well connected with Ahmedabad by rail and private buses.
